The Shands Cancer Hospital at the University of Florida is a 500,000 square foot, new hospital located in Gainesville, Florida. This building is a $388,000,000.00 state of the art facility. It houses 192 private patient beds, a diagnostic and therapeutic oncology, and an emergency and critical care center. It also has various medical imaging suites including three CT Scans, an MRI, a radiology, and afluoroscopic room. The Shands Cancer Hospital was recognized by the Green Building Council with a LEED Gold rating for its excellence in sustainability. The Shands Cancer Hospital opened its doors, and began accepting patients on November 2, 2009.
Borrell Electric Co., Inc. successfully completed the electrical service for the Shands Cancer Hospital in October 2009. The electrical contract value for this new facility was approximately $21,000,000.00 This installation included (4) 15 kV medium voltage metal clad double end unit substations, (10) automatic transfer switches, (12) operating rooms, (11) major medical equipment rooms, a pedestrian tunnel, and site lighting, and a complete underground normal and essential 15KV medium voltage distribution system. Borrell Electric overcame a compressed schedule with rigorous AHCA inspections, and successfully delivered the highest level of quality, on time, and safely. Borrell also saved the Shands Teaching Hospital and Clinics $2,500,000.00 through value engineering the conductor material (CU to AL) during the design phase of the project.
